Binge eating is a disorder in which the person feels uncontrollable urge to eat large quantities of food, often very quickly and to the point of discomfort; a feeling of a loss of control during the binge; experiencing shame, distress or guilt afterwards; and sometimes using unhealthy compensatory measures (e.g., purging) to counter the binge eating.

The condition can form a vicious circle-the person attempts to eat healthy or go on a diet but because of unresolved mental and emotional problems, returns again and again to food binges to try and bring a temporary relief from the emotional suffering.

 

Many people have made a subconscious connection between food and specific emotions, usually heavy and difficult, past trauma, or lack of love and support in childhood. Through episodes of binge eating they attempt to ease the suffering from their trauma which however leads to guilt, shame and new suppression of the emotions they were trying to avoid in the first place since they were unable to face and resolve them.
